Shelbi Stoner

Hey! My name is

Miss Stoner!

Ms. Stoner

I am a third grade teacher and this will be my third year teaching at East Side. I graduated from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tn, and teaching is my passion. I absolutely love working with the phenomenal students we have and the community, as well as the teachers here. I have a dog, whose name is Scamp, and he is my most favorite thing ever. I also am very loud, energetic and outgoing, so it is not uncommon to see me dancing, singing, or just being goofy when I am not teaching. I am looking forward to teaching and learning lots of new things this year!

Something new I am incorporating in my classroom this year is flexible seating. Flexible seating provides students with many opportunities that include; choice, community, comfort, movement and sensory input. The opportunity of choice because students learn best when they have some control over the environment and location of where they choose to work.  The opportunity to build community as they share space and supplies and it encourages them to take turns in different locations with different seating options.  The opportunity for comfort allows students who are uncomfortable and distracted to be productive, because the students who are comfortable are more likely to be calm, productive, and focused. The opportunity for movement because students are expected not to move, and they become distracted and disruptive. Flexible seating allows students to bounce, twist, kick, fidget, wobble, roll, stand, kneel, and sit to suit their needs.  The opportunity for sensory input allows students seating options to stimulate their sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help students process and  focus.  This is extremely beneficial to those students with ADD, ADHD, and ASD.
